Industrial Air Compressor Market Dynamics

Driver: Rising demand for clean and efficient power generation technology

Global energy consumption has increased significantly in the past decade. This rise can be attributed to the growing economies of Asia Pacific. Natural gas is often a transition fuel to meet energy demands as economies shift to renewables and other clean energy solutions. Furthermore, natural gas accounted for approximately 25% of the world’s total primary energy consumption in 2020 and is projected to increase. Natural gas-fired power plants are cheap and easier to build. Engines using natural gas for combustion burn cleaner, with no soot contamination of the crankcase engine oil. As a result, these power plants emit a negligible amount of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur oxide (SO), and nitrogen oxide (NO) compared to oil and coal-fired power plants. Natural gas-fired power plants also have better thermodynamic efficiencies. The air quality tends to improve when natural gas is used instead of coal. The demand for all gaseous fuel types, as a result, has swelled.

Cogeneration, trigeneration, and quad generation applications increase the efficiency of gas-fired power plants even more. Cogeneration and trigeneration systems are being used in developed countries like the US, the UK, Germany, and Ireland. The CHP plants’ efficiency ranges from 60% to 80%. Hence, developing nations will also be adopting these systems to achieve operational excellence and reduce carbon footprint soon. Therefore, the increasing demand for clean and efficient power generation technology is expected to boost the gas engines market during the forecast period.

Restraints: Geopolitical instability affecting the supply and pricing of natural gas.

Australia, Russia, Qatar, Norway, and the US are among the largest natural gas exporters globally. The ongoing political tension between Russia and the European Union (EU) over the Ukraine crisis has incited fears of supply disruptions from Russia. The project supplies gas annually to the EU, contributing a large chunk to Russia’s exports. However, the current standoff between Russia and Ukraine has put the project at risk of being sanctioned from the EU. Russia, in retaliation, is starving the EU of natural gas by supplying around 25.0% less natural gas despite a rise in demand.

The EU is thus experiencing an acute gas shortage. The US also threatens to impose sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project and the companies involved. The Nord Stream 2 is expected to start operations by June 2022, but geopolitical tensions between the parties involved may further delay it. There are also high political tensions between the CIS and certain European countries with regard to such projects. Such political unrest is expected to impact the economies of certain countries in Europe negatively.

Similarly, the trade war between the US & China and Australia & China is also expected to impact the import of natural gas in China from the US and Australia. The US has imposed taxes on Chinese goods, and China has threatened to impose tariffs on the US oil and gas. Australia’s deteriorating relations with China also threaten to disrupt LNG supply from Australia to China. Such political tension and trade wars directly impact and restrain the growth of the market.

Opportunities: Inclination towards gas-fired power plants

Coal-fired power plants account for a major share of the world’s total energy generation. Although many countries have planned to restrict its use in power generation, developing APAC economies are still reliant on coal as a primary source of power. Coal power plants have a longer startup time and often supply extra power during peak demand. Gas-fired power plants have the shortest startup time than coal, oil, or nuclear plants.

Nuclear power plants offer a viable alternative to coal-fired power plants, as the fuel required for nuclear power plants is comparatively cheaper and emission-free, but their construction is capital-intensive. The storage of radioactive waste is very expensive and extremely hazardous. There have been nuclear power plant accidents such as the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster (2011) and Chernobyl (1986), whose consequences have severely hindered the growth of nuclear power plants.

Gas-fired power plants are economical and emit lesser carbons than coal-fired power plants. Combustion of coal emits approximately 229 CO2 per million BTU of energy, the highest of all the fossil fuels. Coal-fired power plants’ emissions also cause smog and reduce visibility. Thus, most coal-fired power plants will be replaced by gas-fired power plants. For instance, many utilities in the US are replacing coal-fired power plants with gas-fired power plants. Pledges by countries like China, India, Australia, and others at the Conference of Parties (COP) in November 2021 indicate reductions in coal usage and reliance in these countries. This shift to gas-fired power plants will pose an opportunity for the gas engines market.

Challenges: Infrastructural shortcomings

Developed countries and regions such as the US, the EU, and Russia have had a proper infrastructure for natural gas import and export for a long time. Nearly 80% of the world’s total proven natural gas reserves are in ten countries, including the US, Russia, Qatar, Norway, and Australia. On the other hand, developing and underdeveloped countries do not have adequate gas reserves. Hence, the share of gas in their total energy production is significantly low. They also lack the required infrastructure for importing gas from other countries. Developing countries are also making inroads into CHP; the technology has yet to peak. The lack of proper infrastructure poses a challenge for the growth of the market.

By Fuel Type, the natural gas segment is expected to make the largest contribution to the gas engines market during the forecast period.

The natural segment held the largest share of the market in 2021, and a similar trend is likely to continue in the near future. Natural gas is mostly used in gas engines for electricity generation as it burns cleaner and has low carbon emission compared to other types of fuels. It also emits low nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter. Utilities are the largest end users of natural gas-fueled engines. The major applications of natural gas engines include industrial and commercial cogeneration. The US, Russia, the UK, France, Germany, China and Canada are strengthening their natural gas distribution networks, which is expected to create a demand for gas engines. Many gas distribution companies provide natural gas capsules for remote location facilities, where gas distribution networks cannot reach. Declining natural gas prices and improving gas distribution networks are expected to drive the natural gas segment of the gas engines market during the forecast period.

By Power Output, the above 15 MW segment is expected to be the largest segment during 2022-2027.

The largest share of the gas engines market, by power output, was held by the above 15 MW segment in 2021. The above 15 MW segment serves the power utilities and propulsion industries. These engines are pivotal in helping major global economies to create a more sustainable energy system by providing a reliable and relatively cleaner alternative. These engines, when used in island-type configurations can supplement major power plants and help avoid blackouts. Also, these engines are finding increasing utility in the marine industry for propulsion purposes. Stringent maritime regulations, restricting the emission of sulfur and other pollutants, is further propelling the use of above 15 MW gas engines to power the world shipping fleet. All these factors, along with the availability of renewable gas-based fuel sources and improved gas distribution network are expected to fuel the growth of the above 15 MW segment during the forecast period.

The mechanical drive segment held a larger share of the gas engines market in 2021. Gas engines used to directly run mechanical equipment, such as pumps, compressors, blowers, chillers, and other rotating equipment, are referred to as prime movers. These engines are used in the oil & gas and manufacturing sectors. In the oil & gas sector, gas engines mainly drive the compressor during the gas gathering, processing, and transmission, especially in LNG plants. Gas engines can also be used to drive an oil well’s water injection pumps and water irrigation pumps. Gas engines for prime moving applications are designed to handle variable loads compared to lean burn engines used for power generation. The growth of the industrial sector will lead to an increase in the requirement of prime movers which eventually will drive the demand for gas engines during the forecast period.

By End-User Industry, the utilities segment is expected to dominate to the gas engines market during the forecast period.

The largest share of the gas engines market in 2021 was held by the utilities segment. The power produced by utilities can power local facilities or exported to local electricity grids. Utilities deploy gas engines to meet the peak load requirement and provide emergency backup solutions to prevent blackout in case of a malfunction of the main power plant. There is an increasing shift towards gas-fired power plants from coal-fired power plants to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases to comply with government-imposed carbon and emission regulations. The application of cogeneration or combined heat and power (CHP) technology also helps increase the overall efficiency of the power plants. These engines mainly use natural gas, coal gas, biogas, or landfill gas. The increasing demand for power, thus, is expected to create favourable circumstances for the growth of the gas engines market during the forecast period.

Asia Pacific is expected to be the largest market during the forecast period.

North America, Europe, South America, Asia Pacific, and Middle East & Africa are the major regions considered for the study of the gas engines market. The growth of the Asia Pacific market is driven by the increasing demand for efficient and clean power generation technologies, and the replacement of aging power generation infrastructure and conversion of coal-based power plants to gas based ones.
